sT. PATRICK´S DAY: DUENDES, TRÉBOLES Y PINTAS DE CERVEZA

El 17 de marzo se celebra St Patrick (San Patricio), muchas ciudades anglosajonas se visten de verde para celebrar esta festividad. La tradición se ha popularizado tanto que ya en todas las partes del mundo es común reunirse con tus amigos para beber juntos pintas de cerveza irlandesa (pints).
Detrás de esta fiesta existe una historia que merece ser conocida para así ser un ginger más (ginger se traduce comopelirrojo y es como se conoce a los irlandeses) y hablar con irish accent (brogue, acento irlandés). Tradition
St. Patrick fue el clérigo (cleric) que instauró el cristianismo en Irlanda y de ahí viene su fama mundial, por lo tanto el 17 de marzo celebran su patrón (Patron saint). Es día festivo (Feast day) en todo el país irlandés, y fue el día en que este santo murió. Como no se conoce la fecha de su nacimiento (date of birth) se celebra la de su fallecimiento (date of death).
¿Qué es lo que debemos saber sobre este día?
Lo principal es saber que este día se celebra en honor a San Patricio, un santo que intentó convertir al catolicismo a los paganos politeístas celtas entre los siglos IV y V, a los que intentó explicar la Trinidad (Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo) en un sólo Dios con un shamrock ó trébol. Pero ya los antiguos druidas celtas consideraban al trébol una planta sagrada por su triada de hojas, ya que para ellos el 3 era un número místico. De ahí que esta planta se haya convertido en todo un símbolo, no sólo de este día, sino de la cultura irlandesa en general. También se dice que San Patricio expulsó a las serpientes del país, por lo que este animal también es motivo decorativo (y de alguna que otra broma) en este día tan especial.
Durante la jornada tendrás que tener los ojos bien abiertos por si ves algún Leprechaun, diminutos seres vestidos de verde, con un llamativo sombrero y dos monedas de oro fuertemente agarradas en sus manos. Zapateros de profesión y un poco antisociales, esconden una gran olla de oro al final del Arco Iris. Dice la leyenda que, si por casualidad alguna vez encuentras uno, no puedes perderlo de vista, ya que te guiará hasta el tesoro que guardan con ahínco. ¡Ah! Por cierto, ellos también son los responsables de los pellizcos que te llevarás si no vas vestido de verde.
¿De repente te ha entrado hambre?
No te preocupes. Puedes probar preparando un exquisito guiso de ternera con patatas asadas y una guarnición de brócoli con mantequilla derretida por encima. O también puedes probar preparando un guiso a base de patata y pescado, como por ejemplo el marmitaco. Y si esto es mucha comida puedes pásate por cualquier pub a degustar una cerveza verde hecha con colorante vegetal o crema de menta, muy típica en los bares este día.
Si tienes la suerte de encontrarte en Estados Unidos por estas fechas podrás vivir esta fiesta a lo grande. Según un censo que se realizó en 1990 hay más de cuarenta millones de americanos con origen irlandés, y en este día todos salen a la calle a celebrar sus raíces.El primer desfile se celebró en 1776 en Nueva York, y todavía sigue siendo hoy el desfile más espectacular de esta celebración junto con el de Chicago. En ambas ciudades se hacen increíbles cabalgatas y festivales, llegando incluso a teñir de verde las aguas de sus ríos.
Así que en Saint Patrick’s Day adorna las ventanas y balcones de tu casa con tréboles, vístete de verde para evitar algún que otro pellizco, guárdate de las serpientes y sal a la calle con familia y amigos a disfrutar de pasacalles, desfiles, buena música y cerveza verde. Un verde que simboliza la Isla Esmeralda y el orgullo de ser Irlandés.
¿Cómo se celebra?
Las celebraciones (celebrations) comienzan desde bien temprano con desfiles (parades) por las calles de ciudades irlandesas y en ciudades de todo el mundo se sale a las calles vestidos de verde (wearing of the green) Bares y pubs ofrecen cerveza teñida de verde esmeralda (green emerald) como ellos suelen referirse a este color de la suerte.
Símbolos
– Uno de ellos es el trébol de tres hojas (shamrock), abundante en el país celta (celtic), que según la leyenda lo utilizó San Patricio para enseñar historia.
– Leprechaun: duendes de la mitología irlandesa que se dedican a remendar zapatos. Las monedas que ganan por ello las guardan en una olla al final del arco iris. Este día es tradición vestirse con disfraces (costumes) de duende.
– Se eligió a los duendes como símbolo irlandés, porque eran considerados guardianes de los tesoros de las hadas(banshee)
– Pot of gold: pot es olla, maceta, recipiente; y gold es oro. Se trata del caldero de oro de los duendes.
